August 18 - August 22

8/18: Started chapter 1 covering structure/function study of atoms and molecules and the scientific method. Also, collected signed safety contracts, which need to be handed in prior to first lab. Tomorrow, continue with chapter 1.
8/19: Discussed states and composition of matter by introducing the particle model. Continue with chapter 1 tomorrow.
8/20: Discussed physical and chemical changes and properties and introduced the concept of energy and the Law of Conservation of Energy. Also, assigned for homework, problems 1.1-1.17, odd.
8/21: Discussed spontaneous processes and interconversion of forms of energy. Introduced topic of international system of measurement, which includes metric system.
8/22: Demonstrated how to access and use LoggerPro software and how to perform the upcoming lab, "Find the Relationship." Continued discussion on metric system illustrating how to convert from centigrade to Kelvin and vice versa, covered prefixes students need to learn and the derived units of volume. Monday, lab will start if the computers are finished.

August 25 - August 29

8/25: Assigned lab stations and drawers and started lab, "Find the Relationship." Finish lab tomorrow and then back into chapter 1.
8/26: Finished lab. Discuss density and measurement tomorrow.
8/27: Covered density and introduced measurement and the concept of uncertainty in measurement, which arises from the last digit estimated in a measurement.
8/28: Day of prayer for Mrs. Pairitz. Also, assigned problems 1.19-1.61, odd.
8/29: Teacher retreat, no classes.

September 1 - September 5

9/1: Labor Day, no classes.
9/2: Lab quiz today. Discussed significant figures and the rules for their usage when performing mathematical operations. Tomorrow, accuracy and precision and dimensional analysis.
9/3: Discussed precision and accuracy and started presentation of dimensional analysis. Tomorrow, work problems using dimensional analysis. Chapter 1 quiz scheduled for next Tuesday, 9/9.
9/4: Due to very short class period, completed STEM inventory for ERCA. Tomorrow, dimensional analysis problems.
9/5: Practiced doing conversion problems, sig. figs, and dimensional analysis. Monday, review for chapter 1 quiz.

September 8 - September 12

9/8: Reviewed for tomorrow's chapter 1 quiz.
9/9: Chapter 1 quiz.
9/10: Started chapter 2 discussing Dalton's Atomic Theory and Laws of Definite a Multiple Proportions.
9/11: Continued in chapter 2 by discussing experiments by Thomson and Millikan. Tomorrow, prelab and class projects.
9/12: Discussed class project choices. Students may choose to do a research project or powerpoints on chapters from the textbook. Also, covered the prelab for Lab#2: "Mass and Change."

September 15 - September 19

9/15: Started "Mass and Change" lab. Continue lab tomorrow.
9/16: Finished lab; tomorrow data analysis from the lab results.
9/17: Discussed data analysis for the lab "Mass and Change." Also, demonstrated use of student calculator for computing averages and standard deviations.
9/18: Handed back chapter 1 homework and quizzes and discussed how to make corrections on the quizzes. Corrections are due Monday as are the post lab reports. There will be a lab quiz as well. Tomorrow, choice of research project of Powerpoint needs to be made. For the chemistry Powerpoints, students should use chapters 12, 16, 18, and 20.
9/19: In chapter 2, covered relative charge and mass, discovery of neutrons, and periodic table organization.

September 22 - September 26

9/22: Lab quiz, covered mean and SD of practice problems, and from chapter two, discussed isotopes.
9/23: No classes, ICF day.
9/24: Reviewed chapter 1 quiz and discussed formation of ions.
9/25: Continued discussion of ions and discussed the periodic table and its organization. Continue with chapter 2 tomorrow.
9/26: Discussed properties of various groups in the periodic table. Monday, prelab, "Did Pete Cheat."

September 29 - October 3

9/29: Discussed prelab for "Did Pete Cheat" which will start on Friday. Also, scheduled chapter 2 test for Thursday, with Wednesday a review day. For homework from chapter 2: 2.1-2.57, odd.
9/30: Chapter 2 quiz rescheduled for Friday, 10/3, and the lab for Monday, 10/6. Also, established the deadlines for Powerpoints: In chapter 2, covered noble gases and computation of atomic mass from naturally occurring isotopes. Tomorrow, finish chapter 2.
10/1: Finished chapter 2 by discussing the mole and Avogradro's number and worked several practice problems. Tomorrow, review for quiz on Friday.
10/2: Reviewed for the chapter 2 quiz tomorrow.
10/3: Chapter 2 quiz; Monday begin the lab "Did Pete Cheat."

October 6 - October 10

10/6: Students made up their chromatograms and worked on their powerpoints/ICEF paperwork. Tomorrow, start lab.
10/7: Ran the "Did Pete Cheat" lab. Handed back chapter 2 quiz, corrections are due Friday, 10/10. Tomorrow, start chapter 3.
10/8: Started chapter 3 by discussing compounds, types of bonds, and how to name simple ionic compounds. Tomorrow, continue in chapter 3.
10/9: Presented concepts of empirical, molecular, and structural formulas and the rules for naming ionic compounds.
10/10: Practiced naming ionic compounds, using transition metals and polyatomic ions. Provided students a handout with all ion forms of the elements. Also, handed out prelab for "Nuclear Pennies" lab. Discuss prelab Monday.

October 13 - October 17

10/13: Worked on ICEF forms and Powerpoints. Tomorrow, work on prelab and discuss naming molecular compounds.
10/14: Discussed how to name molecular compounds and covered prelab for "Nuclear Pennies" lab which will start on Friday.

10/22: Discussed rules for naming acids, both binary and oxyacids, as well as bases. Tomorrow, first naming compounds quiz.
10/23: First naming compounds quiz. Also, covered molar mass of compounds and conversions from mass to moles and number of atoms. Monday, "Nuclear Pennies" lab is due and there will be a lab quiz. Also, first PowerPoints are due. From chapter 3, homework is 3.1-3.79, odd.

10/27: Lab quiz over "Nuclear Pennies" lab and discussed percent composition.
10/28: In chapter 3, discussed elemental analysis and deriving the empirical formula from percent composition. Also, how to determine the molecular formula from the empirical.
10/29: Covered combustion analysis and how to name hydrates. Finish chapter 3 tomorrow.
10/30: Finished chapter 3 by discussing balancing chemical equations and naming hydrates. Tomorrow, review for chapter 3 quiz.

November 3 - November 7

11/3: Chapter 3 quiz for boys; girls on retreat. Tomorrow, boys on retreat and girls will take quiz.

11/11: In chapter 4, demonstrated and practiced calculation of limiting reactant, theoretical yield, and percent yield. Also, introduced solutions and solution concentration, molarity(M), or moles solute/liter solution. Assigned for homework, problems 4.1-4.37, odd.
11/12: Lab #5: Chemical formulas, stoichiometry and solution computations. Tomorrow, back into chapter 4.
11/13: Handed back the chapter 3 quiz for corrections due Monday. Also, discussed solution dilution and solution stoichiometry.
11/14: Naming compounds quiz #3 and discussed solution stoichiometry involving acid/base neutralization reactions.

November 17 - November 21

11/17: Discussed dissolving of ionic and covalent in solution and the interaction of intermolecular forces and the forces involved in hydration. Also, presented concept of electrical conduction of solutions, strong and weak electrolytes, solubility and use of solubility tables.
11/18: Presented precipitation reactions and the procedure for predicting a precipitate using solubility tables.
11/19: Discussed calculations of possible products from precipitation reactions using solution stoichiometry. Also, handed out prelab for "Mole Ratios" lab.
11/20: Covered titrations and acid/base neutralization reactions and calculating concentrations of unknown acids or bases based on stoichiometry of the reaction. Naming compounds quiz #4 tomorrow. Also, extended homework assignment through 4.63, odd.
11/21: Naming compounds quiz #4 and students worked on their research proposals or powerpoints, the latter being due on Wednesday, 11/26.

November 24 - November 28

12/2: Continued in chapter 4 by discussing redox reactions, including oxidizing and reducing agents.
12/3: "Mole ratio" lab report due and there was a lab quiz. Also, finish chapter 4. Tomorrow, review for chapter 4 quiz on Friday.

December 8 - December 12

12/8: Started chapter 15 on acids and bases by covering properties of acids and bases.
12/9: Introduced definitions of acids and bases from Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry. Assigned problems 15.1-15.7, odd for homework.
12/10: Discussed Bronsted-Lowry conjugate acid/base pairs and ionization of strong and weak acids in solution. Pointed out that the goal is to determine molar concentration of hydronium ions to calculate pH.
12/11: Presented ICE tables for calculating hydronium ion concentration for weak acids. Assigned problems 15.9-15.13, odd. Tomorrow, how to calculate pH.
12/12: Demonstrated how to calculate hydronium ion concentration and pH. Monday the review game starts.

January 5 - January 9

1/5: Reviewed fall semester final exam.
1/6: Reviewed use of ICE tables for calculating hydronium ion concentration for pH determination of weak acids. Also, demonstrated calculation of percent ionization for weak acids. Assigned odd problems 15.15 - 15.45 for homework.
1/7: Assigned new lab partners and lab stations/drawers.

January 12 - January 16

1/12: Continued in chapter 15 by discussing pH calculations involving strong and weak bases. Also, assigned problems 15.47 - 15.71, odd as additional homework.
1/13: Finished chapter 15 by discussing the pH of a salt solution when the cation is from a weak base and the anion is from a weak acid. In this case, the resulting pH of the solution will depend on the relative magnitude of the pKa of the conjugate acid versus the pKb of the conjugate base. Started chapter 5 on gas laws by discussing the particle model and how each of the four variables, i.e., n, V, T, and P, affecting gas behavior are related.
1/14: Discussed Boyle's Law and worked some examples. Also, covered prelab for "Acid Dissociation Constant" lab to begin next Tuesday, 1/20. Tomorrow, work on prelabs and consult with Mr. A about next year's science course choices.
1/15: Prelab preparation. Tomorrow, first naming compounds quiz of spring semester.
1/16: Naming compounds quiz and discussed Charles' and Avogadro's Laws. Also, introduced the ideal gas equation and standard conditions.

January 19 - January 23

1/19: MLK Day, no classes.
1/20: Started Ka lab, finished lab tomorrow and share lab data with class.
1/21: Finished lab and shared lab group data with class for analysis. Post lab is due next Tuesday, 1/27. Tomorrow, back into chapter 5.
1/22: Discussed standard state and using the ideal gas equation when given mass of a gas and its molar mass.
1/23: Discussed molar volume and worked an example. Also, demonstrated how molar mass and density can be derived from the ideal gas equation. Assigned problems 5.1-5.29, odd for homework.

January 26 - January 30

1/26: Reviewed naming compounds quiz and discussed Dalton's Law of Partial Pressure.
1/27: Postlab for Acid Dissociation Constant lab due and there was a lab quiz. In chapter 5, discussed Dalton's Law of Partial Pressure further to include concept of mole fraction.
1/28: Discussed homework problems.

2/10: In chapter 6, discussed units of energy, first law of thermodynamics and state functions. Tomorrow, finish prelab.
2/11: Finished prelab and start lab tomorrow to determine the amount of carbonic acid in soda by measuring the pressure of carbon dioxide produced from a definite volume of soda.
2/12: Start gas laws lab.
2/13: Finished lab and handed back chapters 5 & 15 quizzes. Plan on reviewing the quizzes and answering questions about the quiz on Tuesday, 2/17.

2/23: In chapter 6, presented the equation for heat transfer and worked examples, including one illustrating calculation of equilibrium temperature when two objects of differing temperatures come into contact, Tomorrow, continue with chapter 6. Also, Gas Law lab due today.
2/24: Continued in chapter 6 by discussing computation of specific heats of unknown solids using the equation for heat (q) and presented work as negative pressure x change in volume in the case of gas systems. Also, assigned problems 6.1 - 6.21, odd for homework.
2/25: In chapter 6, covered determination of change in internal energy using a bomb calorimetry.
2/26: Introduced enthalpy and constant pressure calorimetry for determining the heat of a reaction. Extended the homework assignment through 6.35 odd. Tomorrow, naming compounds quiz.
2/27: Discussed Hess' Law and worked through an example. Added problems 6.23-6.41, odd, to homework assignment.

March 2 - March 6

3/2: Presented calculating enthalpy change using standard heats of formation. Extended homework for this chapter to include problems 6.43-6.51, odd.
3/3: Finished chapter 6 by discussing fossil fuels and the environment and global climate change. Tomorrow review for chapter 6 quiz on Friday.

3/25: Finished chapter 7 by discussing probability and radial distribution functions, as well as shapes of the orbitals and in phase and out of phase wave functions and their interactions and the ramifications of these interactions for bonding. 3/30: Started chapter 8 on Periodic Table by discussing electron configuration, spin quantum number and writing out quantum numbers for any electron in an atom.
3/31: Discussed shielding and penetration and resultant splitting of energy levels. Reviewed writing quantum numbers for electrons in atoms and presented electron configurations for row 4 transition metals. Assigned problems 8.1-8.41, odd for homework.
4/1: Discussed electron configuration and Aufbau Principle, Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund's Rule.
4/2: Discussed valence electrons and properties of elements. Also, presented periodic trend in atomic radius.
4/3: Spring break begins, no classes.

April 13 - April 17

4/13: In chapter 8, discussed trend in effective nuclear charge.
4/14: Discussed trends in ionic radius and ionization energy.
4/15: Discussed trends in electron affinity and metallic character. Also, assigned problems 8.1-8.41, odd for homework.
4/16: Finished chapter 8 by discussing trends in the alkali metals, the halogens and the noble gases. Also, handed out the prelab for the "Flame Test" lab.

4/30: Finished chapter 9 by discussing using bond energies to predict heats of reaction.

May 4 - May 8

5/4: Started chapter 10 by discussing molecular geometries and introduced VSEPR theory.
5/5: Discussed geometry of internal atoms in large molecules and how to determine the polarity of molecules based on the polarity of the molecule's bonds and vector addition. Also, reviewed the chapters 7 & 8 quiz.
5/6: Discussed orbital hybridization and bonding, introducing sigma and pi bonding based on the side-to-side interaction of non-hybridized p-orbitals. Also, covered the schedule for the rest of the semester. The quiz over chapters 9 & 10 is scheduled for Monday, 5/18. Next Monday, 5/11, and Tuesday, 5/12, we will be doing the Molecular Geometry lab. On Wednesday, we will start chapter 13 on Equilibrium and continue through Thursday, 5/21. Molecular Geometry labs will be due on Tuesday, 5/20. Final exam review days will be Friday, 5/22, and Tuesday, 5/26. Last two WUD's will be Friday, 5/15, and Thursday, 5/21. Also, quiz/lab drop notifications are due by Friday, 5/22. Homework assignment for chapters 9 and 10 will be 1-37, odd from both chapters.
5/7: Discussed hybridization involving 5 and 6 electron groups on the central atom as well as sigma and pi bonding schemes.
